Fringe to Science

I was watching Fringe, which is a science fiction show and deals with inter-dimensional travels and a forensic scientific detective.  I think that this show deals with science because the detectives use science and math to solve their time frame when the story actually happens.  The story comes back and forth through time going to the past and back to the future, then mysteriously in the present again.   The series is at the climax, in which Peter Bishop lost his memory and is stuck in another dimension the one that he was stolen from as a child.  He was stolen from that dimension when the "our" dimension Peter dies.  Again this show deals with science because the main characters are scientific forensic detectives that use their abilities of knowledge to catch the unexpected actions of the "bad" guys.

frog disection blog

In science we dissected frogs (you guessed it) and we learned many fascinating things regardless of the horrible stench.  My group's frog was female and when we opened it we were surprised to see so many eggs.  We found out (from our science teacher) that female frogs had to lay tons of eggs because the survive/death ratio was low.  When Eric and I finished dissecting the frog (our other peers refused to touch it) our science teacher let us mess around with the creature, in which Eric took its eyes out and I shattered the 3rd vertebrae.  I think that the science dissection was a success because Kermit (our frog) was still in one piece and we learned so much.
The frog interested everyone, even the people that refused to touch it.  My favorite part of the dissection was when we had to cut through the skin and muscle of the wonderful frog to expose its organs.  My least favorite parts of the dissection were removing the eggs and having to take the safety equipment off.  The cleaning wasn't so bad, but when you had to remove the gloves the condition it left your hand in was excruciating.  Your hands would be left in a weird condition when the talc from the gloves mixed with your sweat.  However, when you washed your hands, you would feel relieved .http://www.weirdseamonsters.com/wp-content/uploads/2009/03/new-tree-frog.jpg.

hydrocholric model of the stomach p1

During the lab today we did an 'expirement/comparison/lab'.  It included test tubes that demonstrated the stomach.  One solution was a correct demonstration of the stomach(tommorrow we will find out which test tube it is) which is what made it a lab and expirement.  The lab was a sucess so far, it is a two part lab.  I think tommorrow we will be jotting down which effects had taken place over night (I already have predictions of what the results will be).  The lab was exciting, it was so fun to work with hydro-chloric acid,(its pretty high on the acidic scale and can burn you at touch).  Not to mention the lab is demonstrating how the stomach digests food.

chicken wing disection

We disected a chicken wing during class the other day (at least Mrs.Rosseau did).  We learned that if you pull a bicep of an arm bone it extends the arm (also known as an extensor).  Not to forget we also learned that if you pull a tricep muscle it flexes the arm (also known as a flexor).  Many people were sickened and grossed out, but I found the anatomy of the chicken wing pretty interesting, I grasp that concept very well.  The lab was a succes today and I am glad I learned the partial anatomy of the chicken wing.  We learned about the tissues in the chicken wing, epithelial, muscle and not to forget connective tissues.  However we ded not see the nervous tissues which I thought would be really cool and fun to learn and see it.

iodine

Today in science we did a lab about iodine,we learned that it is an indicator.
The lab today was partially successful, the starch in the bag was turning purple, however only a portion.
Mrs.Rosseau stated that it was either the bag wasn't premeable enough or there was too little iodine.
I think that this was an accurate guess, however I was upset that the lab failed and a bit disappointed.
It was still a privilage to do a lab, it was great fun.  The fact that iodine was a potentially serious poison fueled me to  do the lab.
