Theodore Gray's glove with white phosphorus

Theodore Gray was messing around with phosphorous, especially with white phosphorus.  Theodore is a world redeemed mad scientist and does many different labs and experiments that any sane scientist would never do.  The white phosphorus is an uncommon form of phosphorus, but is as flammable as regular phosphorus. This white phosphorus is toxic, but creates a good glow, which has made Theodore Gray famous, this was on TV and on the popular science website: www.Popsci.com.  This is a note worthy discovery or experiment because the element can be added with paint and paint thinner to create glow in the dark paints.  Do not try the experiment at home because a highly trained chemist had to calculate a safe amount of the phosphorus to mix with the paint thinners.  The paint thinner is known as toluene.  As the toluene evaporated, the white phosphorus did what its name implies—it phosphoresced, reacting with the molecules of oxygen from the air to produce a luminous gas fractions of milliliters above the surface of Dr. Theodore's hand, which is very dangerous, white phosphorus can burn through human skin within seconds, it may be as powerful as hydrochloric acid. This reaction is not just risky to create, it’s also difficult to photograph. According to the article, they used the best low-light camera available to get it to show up so well.This can help the United States of America.  An example of how it could help the army is when the lights go out,(enemy attack) the phosphorus paint can help the soldiers see through the attack or power outage.  Another way that it could help us is to paint the insides and outsides with white phosphorus paint.  This could help the people with the houses with the paint in post-hurricane and post-natural resource situations.  It would make it easier to see from a helicopter's point of view and you could still see inside the house.  Also a problem I have is misplacing my phone or iPod in my house.  It would be very innovative if the cell phone companies and apple should start to make the cell phone or iPod cases with white phosphorus paint.  Also a very innovative way to use white phosphorus paint is to station it on door knobs to see where the door knobs are to get out of a building or to go into certain rooms during power-outages

Quantum Computers

An average American tends to have 3 or 4 computers per household which is very amazing.  Many people would believe that they use their computers everyday and for different tasks.  There are people creating Quantum Computers, but they will not be sold on the market for at least 10 years, but a decent Quantum Computer could over power any current super computer.  The decent Quantum Computer can decypher any firewall or proxy and will astonish Bill Gates and Steve Jobs (if he was with us RIP) at the speed and how worthless their computers would be next to the Quantum Computer.  It is similar to the classical computers like Apple, HP and Sony, the similarity is what keeps the computer in the category of computer. The IBM lab discovered a new convenience on the Quantum technology recently and have come up with a theory that it is very possible to create the computer, however there are many possibilities, and different ways to approach the different possibilities, which means there are a lot of ways to engineer the soon to be device.  The reason that the people are so doubtful is because of the components including physics and (of course) Quantum mechanics, which is very hard to do.  There are many possibilities that the Quantum computer cannot exist, like all great theories, Stephen Hawking and his Black Hole theory and Einstein with his gravity and relativity principle. Qubits, which are forms of bites which is basically what this blog is made out of, the little parts of technology within the screen that can let you see this blog which are going to be featured and used in the production of the great machines.  However, the quantum computer is not just a simple build, you need many different machines, working as one to do it's intended purpose, for example you need an ion extracter and a proton extracter, plus many more.  The Quantum Computer will deal with physics (hence the word Quantum).  Many nano chips will be needed to make the Computer and many new technologies may come with it, such as a new processor or a new hardrive with triple the storeage.  The new Quantum computers by IBM may be astonishing, and if you consider the amount of research, time and brains spent on the new computer, you may believe that it is an alien creation, like the alienware laptop.  I believe that the new computers can greatly impact the robotic side of science. For example, the computer can help us create codes and languages to add software to the robot.  This will also help our government in wars, by giving us strategies and hacking into enemy computers, to remotely aquire intellegence. Also, it may be used as an innovator, that can test out certain products and determine if it is a good product or a malicius product.  Not to forget, it can help lead scientists answer lead and important questions, which can impact how we live.

Nearly a week ago, a break through at the material Science department of the University of Southern Mississippi composed a skin-like plastic that while injured bleeds red, like human blood. This was not the first plastic that changes it's form, but it is the first that actually bleeds and self heals to light. The way that the plastic bleeds is similar to the following: the plastic contains water based co-polymers which has a certain molecular bridge that serves as a bridge in the polymer frame. However, when torn or scratched, the bridge collapses or the molecular bond splits. Dr. Mark Urban PhD composed an experiment and the plastic produced red blotches at the site of and injury. Another breakthrough was that unlike other plastics, his breakthrough can regenerate over and over, which is better than the previous plastics, that just healed once then when broken again, stayed red. The model proved to be eco-friendly which is a pro. Several reasons that I think that this plastic can greatly benefit human kind is because it is eco friendly, airplane travel would be loads safer, car windows can repair themselves after being damaged, and scratched phone or ipod screens could heal themselves. The reason that the plastic is eco friendly is a pro because with the amount of fossil fuels and pollution going on now, every eco friendly device can help the ozone layer from totally obliterating. It can improve airplane safety because if a war plane is struck by a bullet, it can heal and regenerate itself, saving the pilot's life. The reason that it can help car windows is that some cars are vandalized. It is a pro because instead of buying new windows, it would just regenerate. Also, if caught in a car accident, if the car is repairable and is workable, the probably shattered windows would regenerate, so again you would not have to buy new windows. The fact that phone and ipod screens could be made out of a regenerative plastic means that, if the screen was scratched or cracked, it can simply re-grow. This can help loads of people, for example, my friend Vineet, who has a phone, has many scratches on it from over usage. The plastic can help him and others like him that have phones with regenerable screens.  From the preceding pro's, I believe that this can postively impact peoples lives.  Dr. Urban PhD's research was funded by the United States Defense Department( USDD).

Sugar and Marshmallows Lab blog


On Wednesday and Friday we did experiments relevant to the types of changes certain molecular/the object itself can go through.  For example, when we burnt the marshmallows, our science teacher explained why the burnt section was black and why it tasted so bitter.  She said that the reason that the "outer layer" of the marshmallows were burnt and tasted bad was because the chemical make-up was altered and that it did not follow the formula made to create the actual marshmallows.  On Friday I realized that the labs were to teach us about changes, chemical (burning, rusting) and physical changes (phase changes, breaking solids).  I would like to say that the lab was successful, not only in the learning, but in the fun.  The next lab was about burning sugar, in which is was about the same concept of the burnt marshmallows.  Using prior knowledge, my group figured out that the make-up of the sugar changed because a new compound was formed.  We could not figure out what the compound was, however.  In the lab, we failed because we did not hold the cubes over the Bunsen Burner and the liquid did not expand.  When our science teacher broke the test tubes, our group was allowed to feel the new substance.  The horrible part about that was Nelly cut herself, technically revealing the rest of the group to a bio-hazard.  This lab was also fun and I believe that every one learned about the different types of changes to the atomic/chemical structure of a substance.

Chemistry Lab Procedure

Lab procedure
  1. Remove toothpicks (using fingers, put on tray).
  2. Pour half the water from the cup (carefully) into the graduated cylinder.
  3. Remove white beans from cup using the spoon (put next to toothpicks on tray).
  4. Filter remaining water into the flask.
  5. Pour water from the graduated cylinder into the flask.put flask on the tray.
  6. Use spoon to remove the glass from the cup.
  7. Start the hot plate (remember it is hot).  Place flask on the hot plate for 5-10 minutes.
  8. Use magnet to extract the iron from the cup.
  9. Remove flask from hot plate (after 5-10 minutes).  Use magnifying glass to identify the build-up on the side of the flask.
  10. Keep the sand in the cup. Place cup next to the other objects.
If followed correctly the objects should be glass, iron, sand, salt, water, wood/toothpicks, and beans.
